Cotton Bikini Panty
Cotton, XS to XXL
$12
or Mix 5 for $45
The right underwear for a white dress is seamless, with bonded edges, in a shade close to your skin, never white and never black. A thong or hipster handles fitted dresses, a high-rise brief or smoothing bodysuit handles thin knits, and a strapless bra covers bare shoulders. Panties are $12, any 5 are $45.

A white dress is the one outfit where the underwear decision is made by the fabric, not by you. Cotton poplin, eyelet, linen, crepe and jersey in white all let some light through, and light is what gives the game away. Whatever sits underneath shows as a shape, and the shape is either a skin tone (invisible) or a contrast (visible).
Three rules cover nearly every white dress. Wear a shade close to your skin, because skin under white fabric reads as nothing and any other color reads as a garment. Wear bonded or laser-cut edges, because sewn elastic leaves a ridge that a fitted dress will trace. And keep it plain: no lace pattern, no bows, no printed waistband, no contrast trim. Every one of those prints through white more clearly than through any other color.
That is why every style in the grid above is a smooth, skin-shade piece. The No-Show Seamless Thong, Bonded Seamless Hipster and Seamless High-Rise Brief are laser-cut microfiber, 76 percent nylon and 24 percent elastane, with a cotton gusset, at $12 each.
| White dress | Best underwear | Price | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fitted or bodycon white dress, knit or jersey | No-Show Seamless Thong in Nude Deep | $12 | No back edge to trace and bonded sides that lie flat on the hip |
| Cotton or eyelet sundress, A-line or fit and flare | Bonded Seamless Hipster in Nude Deep | $12 | Full back for a breezy skirt, flat edges for the fitted bodice and hip |
| Thin white knit or ribbed midi you want smoothed | Smoothing Bodysuit or Seamless High-Rise Brief | $54 or $12 | One smooth layer from bust to hip, so there is no waistband line at all |
| Strapless, off-shoulder or thin-strap white dress | Smooth Strapless Bra in Nude Deep, straps removed | $45 | Molded cups and a silicone-lined band, so nothing shows at the shoulder or slips |
| White linen dress for heat, loose cut | Cotton Bikini Panty in Nude Light | $12 | Breathable cotton modal under a dress loose enough to hide a soft edge |
| Graduation, bridal shower or rehearsal dinner | Thong or hipster plus the strapless bra | $57 | The full invisible base for photos, where flash and sunlight make white thinnest |
If you only buy one pair, buy the hipster. It works under more white dresses than any other cut and gives you full coverage under a skirt that moves.
Wear the shade closest to your own skin. Our seamless styles come in Nude Deep, a warm caramel brown that disappears on medium, tan and deep skin. On fair skin, the No-Show Seamless Thong in Blush and the Cotton Bikini Panty in Nude Light are the closer match. If you sit between two shades, pick the deeper one. A slightly darker shade blends into the shadow of the fabric, while a lighter one glows.
White underwear under a white dress is the most common mistake, and it is easy to see why people make it. In the drawer, white matches. On the body, white is brighter than skin, so through the fabric you see a crisp white outline of the pair. Black is worse in daylight, and so are blush, red and any print. The only exception is a fully lined dress in a heavy fabric, where nothing shows anyway.
The same color logic applies to trousers, and the underwear for white pants page goes through it for jeans, linen and wide-leg styles.
The tighter the dress, the more the edge matters and the less the color matters. A white bodycon or ribbed knit dress stretches over the hip, and stretch fabric drapes into every ridge. A sewn elastic leg presses a small ridge into the skin, and that is plenty to show. A bonded edge is as thin as the fabric itself, so there is nothing for the dress to drape into.
For the clingiest whites, go to a thong or a bodysuit. A thong removes the back edge, and a bodysuit removes the waistband by running one layer from neckline to hip. If you prefer full coverage, the high-rise brief puts its waistband above the natural waist, where a fitted dress usually has a seam of its own. The seamless underwear for bodycon dress guide covers the fit side in more detail.
Size matters as much as cut. A pair one size too small cuts in and makes a line however it is made. Measure your hips and check the panty size chart, XS (hips 34 to 35 inches) through XXL (hips 46 to 48 inches).
Some white dresses are simply see-through: thin cotton voile, gauze, crochet and unlined linen. Hold the dress up to a window. If you can see your hand clearly, underwear alone will not make it opaque, and you have two good options.
The first is a smooth skin-shade layer that covers more of you. The Smoothing Bodysuit in Nude Deep has a double-layer front, so through sheer white it reads as skin rather than as a bra and a pair of panties with a gap between them. The second is a separate slip in a skin shade under the dress. Either way, avoid white and black layers, which turn a sheer dress into a visible outline of everything underneath.
For beach cover-ups and crochet, where the see-through look is intended, a matching set is the usual answer, and the lingerie sets come in black, blush and white.
White dress season runs from graduation in May through Fourth of July and late summer weddings, and you will wear more than one white dress in it. Three pairs in your shade, a thong and two hipsters, cost $32 with pack pricing, and five cost $45. Pack pricing applies in your bag automatically to any panties on this page, in any mix of cuts, colors and sizes.
Add the Smooth Strapless Bra at $45 if you own anything off the shoulder, and the bodysuit if you own a white knit. An order over $50 ships free in the US, in a plain mailer, in 3 to 7 business days. If you would rather have fresh seamless pairs arrive every month, the Panty Club lets you pick the cuts and the shade once. You can also start from the ready-made panty packs and swap colors in the bag.
Wear seamless underwear with bonded edges in a shade close to your skin, such as a seamless thong or hipster. Skin tone does not show through white fabric, while white, black and colored underwear do. Skip lace, bows and sewn elastic, which print through white more clearly than through any other color.
Wear the color closest to your skin tone, not white. White underwear is brighter than skin, so it shows as a pale outline through the dress. Nude Deep suits medium to deep skin, and Blush or Nude Light suits fair skin. Between two shades, choose the deeper one.
Not in daylight. Black shows through almost every white fabric, including cotton, linen and crepe. It only works under a fully lined dress in a heavy fabric, or as a deliberate look under a sheer dress. For an invisible result, choose a skin shade.
Nude underwear in your skin tone is better. White underwear contrasts with your skin and shows as a crisp white shape. A matched skin shade blends in, so the dress looks like it has nothing underneath, which is the goal.
Switch to seamless underwear with laser-cut bonded edges in your true size and a skin-tone shade. A thong removes the back edge entirely, and a smoothing bodysuit removes the waistband line. Sewn elastic and a pair that is too small are the usual causes of visible lines.
Wear a skin-tone layer with more coverage, such as a smoothing bodysuit with a double-layer front, or a skin-tone slip under the dress. Plain underwear alone will not make a sheer dress opaque. Avoid white or black layers, which make everything underneath more visible.
Wear a strapless bra in your skin tone with a silicone-lined band, such as the Smooth Strapless Bra at $45. Molded cups stay smooth under thin white fabric, and the silicone grip keeps the band from sliding down during an evening.
